Neighboring districts are (from the northeast clockwise) Sam Chai, Sahatsakhan, Mueang Kalasin, Yang Talat, Huai Mek of Kalasin Province, Kranuan of Khon Kaen Province, Tha Khantho of Kalasin province again and Wang Sam Mo of Udon Thani Province.
The district is subdivided into 9 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 111 villages (muban). There are two townships (thesaban tambon) - Nong Hin covers parts of tambon Nong Hin and Dong Mun, and Nong Kung Si parts of tambon Lam Nong Saen. There are further 8 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
